Children learn through their environment and in their play. The early childhood years are wonderful for exploration, whether discovery is guided through cerative play or free activiity. Children learn from their peers; the interaction with parents and family, teachers, and friends are important in the learning process.

The physical, emotional, intellectual, and social skills are important needs of the child in the early years. Children need to stretch, explore and contemplate in their play area or activity. The child should have variation in creative opportunity through large and small motor skills, such as climbing or rolling a ball. Children also need quiet retreat for individualization, such as books and soft matierials for feeling and comfort.

The adult's role in the child's education can vary depending on the setting. However, both parent and teacher should work together as a team for the interest and concern of the child. Adults can prepare a setting for children as a model to enhance and stimulate their educational experiences. Other facilitators, such as community agencies, are also beneficial if the parent and/or teacher is in need of other resouces for the child.

The director feels strongly that the home and the early childhood provider or specialist must work closely together for a more positive and enriched environment. Together, this support will help to nurture the child in these most formaive years - the early childhood years.
